Vergessene Götter: Manitu erschuf die Welt

Karl May hat durch seine Romane bei uns die Vorstellung geprägt, alle nordamerikanischen Indianer glaubten an eine zentrale Gottheit namens Manitu. Tatsächlich jedoch kennen die Mescalero-Apachen, der Stamm von Mays fiktivem Häuptling Winnetou, keinen Gott dieses Namens. In einem „ZEIT“-Interview antwortet der Medizinmann Kaydahzinne auf die Frage: „Manitu? ‘Nie gehört. […] Unser Schöpfer heißt Bik’egu’in Dán’“ (Sußebach 2012).
